giving back

This month MAFRAC is proud to spotlight our stakeholder Bread for the City.  Bread for the City is an award-winning front line agency serving Washington’s poor. The agency began as two organizations; Zacchaeus Free Clinic — a volunteer-run free medical clinic started in 1974 —  and Bread for the City which was formed by a coalition of downtown churches to feed and clothe the poor in 1976. The two entities merged in 1995. Today, Bread for the City operates two centers in the District of Columbia and provides free, direct services to low-income residents of Washington, DC. Bread for the City is on a mission to provide comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, legal and social services to low-income DC residents in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
Bread for the City used a MAFRAC microgrant to purchase 1,900 pounds of fresh produce from Black-owned farms through Dreaming Out Loud. Bread for the City provided more than 600 clients in DC with fresh food at their monthly free farmer’s market, which serves the most underserved neighborhoods in the city.
